There are various diverse types of labels, which are classified according to the base material, and the type of adhesive used. The significant role that label printing plays in the promotion of products and services has made people realize how important are printed labels. As there are many types of labels available you should understand what types of label can be used for particular business.

All labels are classified in two ways - First, the labels are classified in accordance to the sort of base material or stock on which the label printing is done and the second classification is based on the type of adhesive used for sticking the label.

Label Types based on the sort of Stock - Paper is one of the most general sorts of stock. A label that is made by use of the paper as stock is also called sticker. Litho is another commonly used base stock and it is very smooth and non-glossy on which one can write or print very easily. Latex is almost similar to litho stock with latex added to it, which makes it very flexible so can be easily used on curved surfaces. Plastic labels are more pliant than all three - latex, litho, and paper. Transparent labels can be made with plastic stock. Plastic labels are printed by means of ultraviolet curing such as bumper sticker/label. Other plastic stocks are vinyl, acetate, and PET film. Foil Labels are made from foil stock and have very shiny surface. These labels are also very flexible and can be used on curved surfaces. Thermal stock has the distinctive feature of varying colors upon being exposed to higher temperatures. Thermal labels are not long-lasting.

Label Types based on type of Adhesive - Permanent Adhesives are the very common and very cheap adhesive type that is used for making self-adhesive papers. As the name denotes they cannot be removed once stuck without using solvents that damages the label. Removable Adhesives labels are made using an adhesive type that adhere fast and cannot easily fall off. However, being removable type, they can be removed without being destroyed or losing its adhesive and can be used at another place. Semi-permanent Adhesives do not get stuck immediately but should be fixed with 48 hours. The semi-permanent adhesives are also called repositionable adhesives. Freezer permanent Adhesives are used for labels that are stuck at low temperature but come off at higher temperatures.

Preference of the type of label depends on the function of the label and does not depend upon stock or adhesive type. Always discuss properly with the manufacturer to understand the purpose of the label before placing the order.

Similarly, barcode labels are of many types depending on the usage like Permanent adhesive and Tamper evident labels, Removable and Freezer labels, Jewelry and Specimen labels, Asset tags, Heat resistant labels, Etching barcodes on metal surfaces, Barcode labels for oily surfaces and ID cards. A barcode system relies upon barcode labels which can be sticking type, come off when required, and should be readable by scanner.
